LA’s newest – Best Bet

LA’s newest – Best Bet

Best Bet is housed on Washington Blvd in the former AFrame location. I didn’t realize the new restaurant was opening until the weekend prior when I was heading to Handy J for a car wash and I tried for nearly a week to get a dinner reservation. Luckily, the reservation gods deemed me worthy enough to get a spot, and the plan was hatched to try out Bet Bet for our Friday dinner. I dropped off my husband prior to looking for parking as I knew it would take a while but upon entering the restaurant, we were immediately seated, and shortly thereafter, our orders were taken.

Our drinks arrived first followed shortly by the dishes.

The fried chicken was served lukewarm, was incredibly juicy and cheesy with a bit of sweetness which was a bit surprising.

The garlic knots were served piping hot and had a crispy garlicky exterior. Its accompanying tomato sauce dip was a bit chunky and tart.

The meatballs were fire, literally mouth on fire from the temperature. The herbaceous tender morsels of meat were served in a bed of cheesy sauce which my husband commented was similar to a fondue.

The cacio e peppe had a bit of a salty bite from the pink peppercorn and was served al dente.

The Godzilla pizza was perfect, hit all the right notes, smoky, savory, meaty and silky.

The enigma, to be honest, was not our favorite. It was missing a crucial ingredient, like perhaps bits of garlic shrimp in the interior as it was just a calzone with pesto filling which oozed out as soon the crispy exterior was pulled apart. The crust had a dense black sesame and white rock salt exterior which made it a bit more interesting but otherwise, the dish was a miss. Bellies full, we passed on dessert.

What made our dining experience exemplary was the attentiveness and response time of the staff. Although they had been open only a few days, they worked seamlessly and in unison with each other, from the two hostesses, our server and the two restaurant managers helping clear tables. It felt like a well-oiled machine rather than a newbie to the neighborhood. All in all, we thought the restaurant was a hit and would happily return with friends.

So glad we were able to visit during its opening week as we met Chef Jason Neroni and his wife who shared that they only allow reservations for half the restaurant and left the other half for walk-ins from people in the neighborhood. Truly a Best Bet for the city!

Ella at Sixty in Beverly Hills

Ella at Sixty in Beverly Hills

Ella is set inside a boutique hotel in the heart of Beverly Hills.

It has a tropical vibe giving it the quintessential Los Angeles experience.

We met a couple of girlfriends who had previously eaten at the establishment for a holiday party several years prior.

We started off with the sourdough focaccia which was quite generous in size. It had a nice light crisp shell with a warm doughy middle and was served with a small bowl of black truffle butter and elderflower honey.

One of our friends ordered the little gem salad which was served with a top layer of breadcrumbs and a heavy pour of buttermilk dressing.

She seemed to enjoy it so it seemed like a winner. Her next dish, the grilled broccolini, was perfectly cooked, crisp but not overdone lightly seasoned.

My husband ordered the bolognese which was nice and al dente.

We also shared a spicy pepperoni pizza which was good but was doused with oil.

Two of us ordered the burger and fries which was just the perfect California burger. The ground beef was lightly seasoned and smoky but still perfectly moist and the fries were exceptionally crispy and salty.

After dinner we headed up to the quieter rooftop bar to have our nightcap. It had a lovely view of the city and was just a great place to decompress from the week.

All in all, Ella was a lovely experience. The only downside during our dinner was the erratic service. Our waiter had a penchant for disappearing for long periods of time but the food was good and it had a nice vibe.

Fig at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel

I have been to Fig many times over the past few years for work functions and parties held at their venue. The food was always exemplary and I expected the same from our outing for their Poolside Cinema events. Sadly, my recent experience was quite the opposite. Service was a bit slow which was understandable as I believe the pool area only had one server attending to all the customers. The alcoholic drinks were very meager in portion. What was worse than the light pour was the quality of the food.

To say that the $29 foraged mushroom pizza tasted like cardboard with arugula on it would be an understatement and kind.

I’m a french fry connoisseur but the $14 plate of supposed rosemary fries resulted in only 3 fries being eaten from the batch. It was as if potatoes were cut and fried but the kitchen forgot to season it.

The $28 rockfish was barely passable as the fish was tender but the fish, squash, eggplant and peppers had no distinguishing flavors.

The only saving grace was the $26 cacio e pepe. It’s as if it was cooked in a different kitchen than the prior three orders. The pasta was perfectly cooked, al dente. The cheese packed a punch of flavor and the black pepper added a bit of heat to the dish. If we were ever to return, we would likely order just that dish, which would satisfy the $25 minimum.

I honestly am appalled by what Fig was allowed to serve us. I asked the family who sat in front of us, and they thought everything they ate was horrible as well and they ordered other items from the menu. I cannot ever recommend Fig to my friends or even to my worst enemy. It’s a hard pass on their food and drinks on a go forward basis.

Antonio’s Pizzeria & Cabaret

Antonio’s Pizzeria & Cabaret

During our visit to Catalina Island, we were looking for a reasonably priced restaurant with a waterfront view, and we found that in Antonio’s Pizzeria. They had an outdoor patio with tables to the side of the restaurant as well as in front of the marina. We were fortunate to have been seated by the latter providing a stunning view for our meal. The service was slightly slower than anticipated, but the food more than made up for it. One never knows for certain what the quality of the food will be when choosing a restaurant randomly, but we truly lucked out with Antonio’s. All of the dishes we ordered were pretty spectacular.

I requested the fish and chips. The batter and fries were crispy and seasoned perfectly while the fish surprisingly remained moist inside the batter. My husband’s chicken and penne pasta tasted as if it was cooked by an Italian grandmother.

The dish that stole the show, however, was Antonio’s cheese crisp which was a thin, crispy crust pizza brushed with garlic and butter topped with five cheeses, chopped pepperoncini, chopped pepperoni and salami. It was the perfect combination of a crunchy, garlicky, savory bite.

The restaurant is truly a gem. They understand how to put their best foot forward with their authentic Italian recipes. We would happily recommend Antonio’s Pizzeria & Cabaret to anybody visiting the island.

Wall St Pizza

Wall St Pizza

I had seen Wall Street Pizza on my many jaunts to Costco. Its cross street is Inglewood Blvd and is next to Payless Shoes in a sleek, contemporary building with a nail salon and a yoga studio. I decided to try it out the night of first round of NFL playoffs. I ordered at 3:30 p.m. for a 5:15 p.m. pickup by my husband. What drew my husband’s attention was the Bull & Bear Pizza which is macaroni and cheese, cheddar cheese, mozzarella, bacon and parmesan cheese. Since it was going to be our first sampling of their menu, we opted for the Crash Pizza which is a 50/50 split of two of their specialty pizzas. When I called in my order, I asked for a recommendation on what would pair well with the Bull & Bear. I was given 3 recommendations but opted for The Put Pizza which had breaded chicken parmigiana cutlet, tomato sauce and mozzarella.

Neopolitan pizza

At 5:02 p.m., my husband messaged me and asked me to DVR the Rams game for him and that he was en route to pick up the pizza. I was in the middle of a mani and pedi while watching Batman vs. Superman which I had never seen. At 5:50 p.m. my husband was not yet home so I called and apparently when he arrived, the pizza wasn’t ready but he was finally on his way home. When he arrived, I lifted the pizza box to take a picture and discovered it was not the pizza I had ordered 3 hours prior and I asked how much he paid with tip. He told me $34 and considering it was essentially an 18″ Neapolitan cheese pizza which cost $16.95, I lost my marbles and called the restaurant. To add insult to injury, my call was picked up but I was on hold for quite some time. I handed the phone to my husband and changed from pajamas, nails wet and got in my car. Luckily, the rain had subsided so en route, I called the restaurant and advised the girl who answered that the wrong order had been given to my husband and she apologized and said that order was meant for Postmates and that if I wanted to come pick up the correct pizza, she would throw in some garlic knots. I arrived and advised her that I was there to pick up the correct order, that I wanted her to make it right and credit us the entire $34 since I was inconvenienced in having to drive there with wet nails and she mentioned that we had already been credited. She then asked what else she could do to make it right and whether I still wanted the pizza. I was already livid but tried to calm down since I knew they were losing money twice over on us and I refrained from pointing out that she had promised to give me a new one when I called her in the car.

Cashier and bar area
Beer & Wine bar

I spent the 15 or so minutes waiting for the correct pizza checking out the restaurant. It’s actually quite nice. They have a contemporary roll-up garage door that opens up to an outdoor heated patio. There is a small beer and wine bar and a few tall tables with stools as well as a few deuces and four tops. Kaelin who was the cashier and Keith the bartender both apologized to me profusely and to Kaelin’s credit, she maintained her calm after I put her through the ringer and took responsibility of not checking the orders.

Luckily for the restaurant, all the pizzas are actually quite delicious in their own special way. The Neopolitan pizza had an even tomato base and had a smoky cheesy flavor with a thin crispy crust. The Bull & Bear was exceptional. It was gooey, with a smokey bacon creamy flavor topped with al dente penne pasta. It was the only pizza with white sauce which was evenly coated in every slice. The Put Pizza was equally delicious and was possibly my favorite because the chicken was moist and tender and yet it was breaded. I think if both pizzas could be combined over white sauce, that would be the solid winner.
Despite the inconvenience of having to go back for the correct pizza, we will be returning to possibly request the Bull & Bear and Put Pizza combo.

Crash pizza w/ Bull & Bear and Put Pizza

I believe in giving a new business with great promise the opportunity to work out its quirks. We won’t make the mistake of not checking our order the next time so kudos for making it right, a pat on the back for maintaining their cool and applause to the cooks preparing the food in the kitchen. Hopefully, on our return trip, it will be a 5 star review.
